Saint Benedict is taking the focus away from materials and putting the focus back on the real miracle of Christmas: the birth of Jesus Christ. Teachers are working Christmas into their curriculum during this special time of the year.

Computer and Gym, Mrs. Nancy Yauneridge: Students in 1st grade are using Microsoft Word to create a birthday card for baby Jesus, while students in 2nd and 3rd grade are working with images to print ornaments for the Jesse tree. 4th graders are researching Advent traditions and will present the information they find in a PowerPoint presentation. 5th graders are building Christmas presents for loved ones and 6th graders are researching Christmas traditions around the world which they will present via PowerPoint in January. Lastly 7th and 8th grade students will be using their coding skills to draw a snowman using JavaScript.

Pre-Kindergarten, Mrs. Gloria Demi: The Pre-Kindergarten class is using stories of God’s love to focus on faith this Christmas. They are preparing for Christmas by reading The Angel Tells Mary Wonderful News, as well as by reading Mary’s Baby and The Christmas Play. A Child is Born, Come and See, Christmas in the Barn, Christmas is Here, and The First Christmas. Hands on craft projects will involve creating Christmas cards for their family, creating stars from craft sticks, painting and decorating Christmas trees, and tracing and cutting out stockings to decorate. Pre-Kindergarteners also have take home and return projects. They have a vacation chain link where they count the number of days of no school. Students cut out rectangular shapes and connects the links of their chain. The first link is green and the last link is white. Students can bring the white link back to school, after break, and receive a prize. Students also get a seven page Christmas coloring book to take home.

Kindergarten, Ms. April Bishop: Her students are discussing who Saint Nicholas is and making shoes to leave for him. Students also are making snowmen with moving noses to countdown to Christmas and will be making paper plate Christmas trees.

8th Grade, Mrs. Kimberly Lallemand: Students are reading, discussing, and learning about poems, editorials and short stories by reading The Boy Who Laughed at Santa Claus by Ogden Nask, Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Clause by Francis Church, and The Gift of Magi by O. Henry. In conjunction with reading Yes, Virginia, students will be writing letters to Santa as part of Macy’s Believe campaign which donates $1.00 to the Make a Wish Foundation for every letter received.
