On July 9, the Northern Cambria Community Development Corporation (NCCDC) is hosting the inaugural Northern Cambria County Regional Heritage Festival, which includes a poster and essay contest that asked local students to represent the history/heritage of their community.

Saint Benedict School is proud to have three students who were chosen as winners.

Students in grades six through eight participated in the poster portion of the contest, while high school students wrote essays.

Posters were judged by local historian Jack Bartock, who judged each poster on historical accuracy and visual appeal.

We recently caught up with Alan Miller, alumnus of Saint Benedict, for a short Q&A. With the passing of his parents, Alan made a gift to Saint Benedict, carrying out the wishes of his mother. Below Alan shares his experiences at Saint Benedict and the reasons for his donation.

Q: What inspired you to make a donation to Saint Benedict?

A: The donation was made with the passing of my parents. My father passed seven years ago, and my mother passed a year ago. In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to Saint Benedict to be used toward reading materials for the library. She believed that all children should have books in their hands.

Q: Did any of your relatives attend Saint Benedict?

A: My mother and father were parishioners of Saint Benedict. I had five older brothers, all of whom attended and graduated from Saint Benedict.

Saint Benedict School goes far beyond the traditional definition of a school. Our strong faith community, combined with an environment that encourages positive decision-making, enables our students to grow and succeed beyond academics.

True success requires teaching to both the heart and mind, something we strive to do each day. In this way, our students not only gain academic competency, but learn valuable lessons in tradition, faith, teamwork, leadership, service, and confidence.

Thanks to support from our parents, alumni, businesses, and community members, our students are able to participate in a variety of programs and activities that promote personal growth.
